International students explore Ubon Ratchathani’s heritage through traditional crafts, local cuisine, folk games and a shared Loy Krathong celebration ahead of IOAA-Jr 2026.

UBON RATCHATHANI, Thailand – Young astronomy competitors from around the world experienced northeastern Thailand’s traditions and cultural heritage at a special event organized by the Faculty of Science at Ubon Ratchathani University. The program, titled Light of Ubon Ratchathani Heritage, took place at Khum Chan Hom in Ubon Ratchathani province on November 3, the day before the IOAA-Jr 2026 competition began.

The event introduced participants to traditional Isan culture through hands-on activities, including dressing in regional attire, making candles, preparing Thai desserts, learning textile weaving, and playing traditional folk games. The students also sampled local cuisine, giving them an opportunity to discover the region’s customs and way of life while getting to know fellow competitors from different countries.

The cultural program concluded with a Loy Krathong activity, during which participants made their own krathong, or traditional floating offerings, and released them onto the water together. The experience provided an opportunity for cultural exchange and friendship, allowing the young visitors to enjoy Thailand’s local traditions and hospitality before turning their attention to the upcoming astronomy competition.
