Diver Maria Boadella captures a whale shark swimming near HTMS Su Phairin, a former Royal Thai Navy vessel now serving as an artificial reef off Koh Tao in Surat Thani.

SURAT THANI, Thailand – A whale shark has been spotted swimming near HTMS Su Phairin, a former Royal Thai Navy vessel converted into an artificial reef off Koh Tao in Surat Thani province. Diver Maria Boadella captured the encounter on October 14, drawing attention to the diverse marine life around the popular diving site south of Koh Nang Yuan.

The whale shark, the world’s largest living fish species, was filmed swimming around the submerged vessel, which has become a habitat for schools of fish and other marine organisms. Previous whale shark sightings in the area have added to Koh Tao’s appeal as a destination for diving and marine wildlife observation.

In September 2023, HTMS Su Phairin was placed on the seabed alongside another decommissioned naval vessel, HTMS Han Hak Sattru. The project, supported by the Royal Thai Navy, established artificial reefs and alternative diving sites to support marine habitats, provide educational opportunities, and ease pressure on natural coral reefs.

Rumluek Assavachin, president of the Koh Tao Tourism Business Association, attributed the project’s progress to cooperation among local communities, tourism operators, the Royal Thai Navy, and government agencies. (NNT)
