BANGKOK, Thailand – The United States has extended New Year greetings to Thailand as the country celebrates Songkran 2025, its traditional New Year festival. In a statement issued on April 12, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio conveyed his well-wishes to the Thai people, recognizing the cultural importance of Songkran as a time of renewal and celebration.
The message reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between the United States and the Kingdom of Thailand, describing the bilateral relationship as one built on shared interests and enduring cooperation. The United States expressed appreciation for its close ties with Thailand and the Thai-American community, which it said continues to contribute to mutual understanding and progress.
The United States and Thailand maintain a formal alliance, with diplomatic ties that stretch back nearly two centuries. Their cooperation spans a wide range of areas, including trade, regional security, education, and cultural exchange.
The greeting comes as Thailand hosts major Songkran events nationwide, with festivities drawing large crowds both locally and from abroad. In Bangkok, the Maha Songkran World Water Festival at Sanam Luang has attracted international attention, while other provinces are staging their versions of the Thai New Year celebration.
The Songkran period runs from April 11 to 15 this year, with extended events planned in many parts of the country through the end of the month. (NNT)
