A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, felt across northern Thailand, particularly in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai.

BANGKOK, Thailand – At 09:24 AM on April 13, the Earthquake Monitoring Division of the Thai Meteorological Department reported a 5.9 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 10 km, occurring in Myanmar, approximately 271 km northwest of Mae Hong Son. The tremor was felt strongly in several Northern provinces of Thailand, including Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai, though no significant damage has been reported.

In Chiang Mai, residents in the Suthep sub-district reported slight shaking, with condominium lights swaying. Similarly, in Chiang Rai’s Muang district, some apartments experienced a mild shaking. While the shaking was noticeable, authorities confirmed there were no reports of structural damage or injuries.

The Geological Disaster Management Center of the Department of Mineral Resources identified the cause of the earthquake as the movement along the Sagaing Fault, a right-lateral strike-slip fault, which runs through the region.
