PATTANI, 3 June 2014 – Two volunteer Army rangers were gunned down by a group of unidentified perpetrators as they were using motorcycles to patrol at the Narathiwat-Pattani Route (Highway 42).

According to a news reporter, the rangers were seriously wounded in a drive-by shooting by a group of insurgents who boarded a pick-up truck. The suspects used a number of war weapons and a 9mm pistol to shoot at the rangers. Even though the rangers returned fire, the insurgents quickly fled the scene and were nowhere to be found.

The rangers were identified as 40 year-old Papon Sommaneewan and 26 year-old Samphan Onprawat. Both were quickly rushed to the Saiburi Crown Prince Hospital. Unfortunately, their injuries were too severe and they were pronounced dead at the hospital a couple of hours later.
