BANGKOK, Thailand – Police on Monday escorted two railway employees to the Criminal Court for initial detention following a collision between a freight train and a passenger bus that killed eight people and injured over 30 others. Following detailed interrogations, police escorted train driver Sayomporn and crossing barrier operator Uthen from Makkasan police station to court. The driver faces preliminary charges of reckless driving causing death and serious injury, while barrier operator has been charged with reckless acts causing death, severe injury, and bodily harm. Authorities are opposing bail for both men.
When questioned by reporters during his transfer, Uthen said only, “I am sorry.” Sayomporn did not respond to journalists’ questions regarding the warning signals, his braking actions, or his drug test results. The incident occurred on May 16, when freight train No. 2126, traveling from Laem Chabang to Bang Sue, collided with an air-conditioned Route 206 bus at the Makkasan intersection crossing under the Airport Rail Link on Asoke-Dindaeng Road. The collision triggered a severe fire.
Preliminary investigations indicate the bus had stopped at a red traffic light while straddling the tracks, while the crossing barrier failed to lower normally. Meanwhile, the bus driver, identified as Laphit, remains hospitalized with severe injuries and burns. Police stated that Laphit has not yet been formally charged, as investigators must wait for his condition to improve before conducting an interrogation. Blood tests conducted during Laphit’s medical treatment showed no trace of illicit substances. However, police expect he will eventually face the same charges of reckless driving causing death and property damage. (TNA)
