Two killed, 40 injured in Yala car bomb attack

YALA, July 26 — Two people were killed and at least 40 were injured in a car bomb attack at a hotel in Betong district of the southernmost province of Yala on Friday.

This was the first such attack in the district in eight years.

The explosion was occured in front of the Holiday Hill Hotel on Phakdeedamrong Road at around 4.30pm on Friday.

According to bomb experts, the 50 kilogram me device was hidden in a pick-up truck parked in front of the hotel. The blast was triggered via mobile phone signal.

At least two people were killed and at least 40 people–including foreigners–were wounded in the bomb attack, and of them five were seriously wounded.

Witnesses say they saw the bomber drive the pick-up truck to park at the hotel. The police were combing through CCTV footages to find clues.

In 2006, insurgent groups bombed 11 locations in Betong district, where banks were mostly targeted. Many people were injured from that attack.
