BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s Ministry of Culture has officially submitted the nomination of “Chut Thai” (traditional Thai dress) for recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. The submission, based on a 2024 Cabinet resolution, will enter UNESCO’s evaluation process in 2026.
Culture Ministry Permanent Secretary Prasop Riang-ngern confirmed the move complies with the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The goal is to promote international recognition of Chut Thai and preserve its cultural significance on a global stage.
Amid online concerns that Cambodia’s bid to register its traditional Khmer wedding ceremony may overlap with Thai cultural elements, officials clarified that Cambodia’s nomination does not reference or include Chut Thai in any way.
UNESCO’s evaluation process is rigorous, emphasizing transparency, mutual respect, and international cooperation. Thailand’s nomination reflects pride in its heritage and the desire to share its cultural identity with the world through creativity, understanding, and grace.
