New EC Chairman Narong Klanwarin says the commission is prepared to manage the election and will officially set the date next week, while monitoring developments on the Thai–Cambodian border.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s new Election Commission (EC) Chairman, Narong Klanwarin said on Friday that the general election could take place as early as February 8, 2026, following the dissolution of the House of Representatives by the Prime Minister.

Narong, who recently took the helm of the poll body, said the EC is fully prepared to manage the election and will hold a meeting next week to officially set the date.

“By law, when the House is dissolved, the Election Commission must meet to set the election date,” Narong told reporters. “We will convene on Monday and Tuesday, December 15-16, to make a clear decision.”

The EC office had anticipated the possibility of a House dissolution and had already prepared the constituency boundaries and a complete election timeline.

Narong conceded that February 8, 2026, is a distinct possibility for the polling date.

When asked whether the ongoing situation on the Thai-Cambodian border might pose an obstacle to the general election, Narong stated that the EC is continuously monitoring and anticipating developments in the region.

The announcement comes after Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul dissolved the House on Thursday, ending the minority coalition government and triggering a new election process within the constitutional timeframe no less than 45 days but no more than 60 days. (TNA)
