BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas has affirmed that Thailand is progressing with preparations to host the International Monetary Fund–World Bank Group Annual Meetings in 2026. The update followed discussions with Bank of Thailand Governor Vitai Ratanakorn and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on coordination and planning for the event.
Officials said preparations are moving forward according to schedule, with the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center serving as the main venue. Participants in the discussion also reviewed Bangkok’s capacity as a major international conference destination and cooperation between Thai authorities and international partners involved in organizing the meetings.
The 2026 gathering will be the second time Thailand hosts the IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings, following the 1991 event at the same convention center. Authorities said the opportunity highlights confidence in Thailand’s ability to organize large-scale international conferences and provides a platform to present the country’s development experience and economic outlook.
The Bank of Thailand said the meetings will take place amid challenges ranging from geopolitical tensions to climate-related risks. The event will provide a platform for policymakers from around the world to exchange views and discuss economic policy, financial stability, and digital finance. The IMF managing director also acknowledged cooperation among Thai agencies in preparing for the gathering, which is scheduled for October 2026 in Bangkok. (NNT)
