BANGKOK, Thailand – The government is implementing four mechanisms to address online counterfeiting and intellectual property infringement. This effort led to the seizure of over 322,000 illicit items valued at 104 million baht in the first seven months of 2026.
Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Persvivatana stated that, under the direction of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Suphajee Suthumpun, the Department of Intellectual Property is working with rights holders and online platforms to implement systemic countermeasures. From January to July 2026, authorities addressed 140 online infringement cases, blocked 1,471 listings, and seized 322,077 items worth 104,344,850 baht.
The strategy is based on four main mechanisms. First, authorities block websites and livestreams that broadcast pirated content, in coordination with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society. Second, they are developing a real-time application programming interface to link intellectual property data with e-commerce platforms, which will speed up merchant and product screening. Third, an “IP Verified” badge will be introduced for authorized vendors, providing consumers with reliable purchasing information. Finally, enforcement efforts are being strengthened by working with anti-money laundering agencies to trace financial networks and dismantle major infringement operations at their source, rather than only removing individual listings.
The Deputy Spokesperson emphasized that this comprehensive approach helps ensure a safe online marketplace and protects legitimate businesses from unfair competition. Currently, the department uses a “Notice and Takedown” system through memorandums of understanding with major platforms such as Shopee, Lazada, TikTok Shop, LINE, and Nex Gen Commerce. The application programming interface and verification badge systems are still under development.
The Deputy Spokesperson urged consumers to verify store details before making purchases and report suspected infringements to the Department of Intellectual Property through the 1368 hotline or the official website. (NNT)
