Thailand to continue as the opening race host for MotoGP from 2027 to 2031 at Buriram’s Chang International Circuit.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Cabinet has approved Thailand’s proposal to continue hosting the MotoGP World Championship from 2027 to 2031, with a total budget allocation of approximately 3.997 billion baht for event organization.

MotoGP is one of the world’s most popular motorsport competitions, drawing more than 800 million viewers across 207 countries. Thailand has previously hosted the event from 2018 to 2025, helping showcase the nation’s capability in organizing global sporting events and strengthening its position as an emerging sports hub within ASEAN.

Under the proposal, Thailand will remain the opening race of the MotoGP season each year in March. The races will take place at Chang International Circuit in Buriram Province and will include three categories: MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3. Organizers expect around 76 professional racers to participate and anticipate more than 1 million spectators throughout the period.

The Budget Bureau has approved the plan in principle. However, the Sports Authority of Thailand and related agencies will need to draft a detailed operational plan, assess readiness, and outline financial management measures. This includes strategies to generate revenue and added economic value, as well as a risk management plan should sponsorship or commercial income fall short of expectations. Potential negative impacts must also be taken into account.

Once these plans are finalized, the proposal will be resubmitted to the Cabinet for final consideration. (NNT)
