Thailand receives high ratings for tackling child labor

BANGKOK – A report by the United States Department of Labor praised Thailand’s efforts in tackling the issue of child labor.

According to the Government Spokesman Bureau, the Thai government has continuously placed great emphasis on the issue of child labor in the country.

Most recently, the United States Department of Labor issued its 2014 report on the child labor situation worldwide and has ranked Thailand among the 13 countries with exemplary efforts in addressing the issue of child labor.

The report praised Thailand’s progress in tackling the matter by establishing a committee on illegal alien labor and human trafficking problems, raise the minimum age for those working in the agricultural and fishing sectors, strictly following up on its labor policy, and adhering to international guidelines on combating child labor.

The Spokesman Bureau added that the report reflected the government’s determination in tackling the country’s longstanding problems, not only concerning child labor, but also illegal alien labor and human trafficking.
