Police Major General Suraphan steps in to defuse diplomatic fallout, postpones ASEAN police summit indefinitely as Thai-Cambodian tensions raise security and attendance concerns.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Royal Thai Police has officially postponed the 43rd ASEAN National Police (ASEANAPOL) Conference, originally scheduled for July 30 to August 3, 2025, in Bangkok. The decision comes amid rising tensions between Thailand and neighboring Cambodia, prompting concerns over the convenience and safety of international delegates.

In an urgent letter (No. RTP 0002.2/80) signed by Police Major General Suraphan Thaiprasert, Commander of the Foreign Affairs Division, the Royal Thai Police informed all 10 ASEAN police member states, dialogue partners, and observers of the indefinite postponement.

The letter stated:

“We regret to inform you that, due to unforeseen circumstances, the 43rd ASEANAPOL Conference will be postponed until further notice. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this last-minute change may cause and thank you for your continued understanding and support. This decision was made with the utmost consideration for current events and in the best interest of all participants.”

The Royal Thai Police also pledged to coordinate closely with the ASEANAPOL Secretariat in Kuala Lumpur to determine a new mutually agreed-upon date. Once confirmed, the revised schedule and logistical details will be promptly shared with all involved.

The move follows a reported escalation in the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia, which raised concerns about the ability of some national police chiefs and senior officials to travel and participate comfortably.

ASEANAPOL, the law enforcement arm of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), was established in October 1981 and currently includes 10 member countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The Secretariat is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and facilitates regional cooperation in tackling transnational crimes, sharing intelligence, and promoting joint training programs among police forces in the region.

As of now, no new date has been set for the postponed summit. (TNA)
