BANGKOK, Thailand – Permanent Secretary for Interior Unsit Sampuntharat has urgently directed the governors of Tak, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai to enhance security and emergency preparedness in response to escalating conflict in Myanmar, especially near the Thai border in Kayin and Kayah States.

Clashes between Myanmar government forces and ethnic armed groups have intensified, involving airstrikes and long-range weapons. These actions have caused casualties and displaced civilians to areas near the Thai border. The Ministry is deeply concerned about stray munitions entering Thai territory, which threaten the safety and property of citizens along the border.

To protect residents, the Ministry has ordered increased border security. Provincial governors must coordinate with administrative, military, and police units to intensify patrols and set up checkpoints at natural crossings. Authorities are also required to monitor for unauthorized troop movements or incursions, conduct drills, and prepare contingency plans for potential emergencies affecting Thai territory.

The directive also calls for proactive community protection and clear communication. Local authorities must warn residents in high-risk areas to avoid dangerous border zones, prepare evacuation plans, and designate safe zones or temporary shelters. Security should be increased around schools, hospitals, and key community locations.

The Ministry emphasizes the need for accurate information to prevent public panic and the spread of false news. Officials are also instructed to strictly control illegal border crossings and increase surveillance to prevent smuggling and illegal border trade. (NNT)
