Thailand keeps Thai-Cambodian border restrictions in place amid tensions; full authority handed to Gen. Natthaphon.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Phumtham Wechayachai affirmed on Friday that all existing measures at the Thai-Cambodian border will remain in place, with no relaxation of cross-border movement. He emphasized that no discussions regarding the reopening of border checkpoints were held during the latest National Security Council (NSC) meeting.

Phumtham stated that General Natthaphon Nakpanich, Deputy Minister of Defense, has been granted full authority to manage and resolve border-related issues. Any decision regarding checkpoint openings will still require review by the NSC.

The announcement comes amid reports of continued tension along the Thai-Cambodian border, including a recent online video showing what appeared to be Cambodian troops carrying machine guns entering Thai territory before being intercepted by Thai paramilitary forces. Phumtham said he had not yet seen the footage and had not received official reports on the incident.

While General Natthaphon is empowered to seek solutions, any decision on reopening checkpoints must go through formal NSC procedures. (TNA)
