Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar step up joint action to tackle transboundary haze and air pollution

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand, together with the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Myanmar, is implementing a joint action plan to address transboundary air pollution and haze, aiming to ensure a healthy environment and safe air quality throughout the region.

Thananchai Wansuk, Deputy Director-General of the Pollution Control Department and Head of the Thai delegation, attended the 2nd Meeting of the Joint Working Group on Monitoring the Implementation of the Joint Action Plan and a workshop on implementation for 2026–2027. The meetings took place in Vientiane, Lao PDR, with representatives from Thailand, Lao PDR, and Myanmar.



The three countries exchanged information on forest fires and transboundary haze. Participants endorsed the joint working group’s terms of reference and work plans, and discussed forming a technical working group to support effective implementation of the action plan.

The group also discussed developing fire-risk maps, establishing a joint air-quality monitoring and reporting system, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and launching public awareness campaigns to reduce transboundary pollution. These initiatives aim to strengthen coordination and improve timely responses to air pollution challenges.


This cooperation demonstrates the shared commitment of Thailand, Lao PDR, and Myanmar to systematically and sustainably address forest fires and transboundary haze, contributing to better environmental conditions and public health across the region. (NNT)
