Authorities warn of hazardous air quality in Bangkok, the Northeast, and Lower North due to temperature inversions and poor ventilation, urging residents to avoid outdoor activities, halt burning, and use protective masks.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thai authorities have issued an urgent health warning as PM2.5 dust pollution is forecast to spike sharply across the country between November 28 and December 2, driven by poor atmospheric ventilation and temperature inversions.

The Pollution Control Department (PCD) reported that levels are already exceeding safety standards in Bangkok, its vicinity, and the Northeast, reaching levels that pose immediate health risks (Code Orange).

The Centre for Air Pollution Mitigation (CAPM) highlighted that a combination of low ventilation and a “low ceiling” effect is trapping pollutants near the ground.

Special monitoring is focused on the Bangkok Metropolitan Area, the Northeastern region (including Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen), and the Lower North (including Phitsanulok and Sukhothai). The PCD urged the public to immediately halt all outdoor burning, use public transport, and limit outdoor exposure, advising vulnerable groups to wear protective masks.
