Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirms Thailand’s strong response to the landmine incident, ordering diplomatic downgrades and strict border closures for national security.

BANGKOK, Thailand – According to the official Thai government website, Thailand has decided to downgrade diplomatic ties with Cambodia. The move follows a landmine incident on Wednesday that severely injured a Thai soldier on patrol along the border.

Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed the incident occurred on July 23rd in Ubon Ratchathani province. A reconnaissance patrol from the 14th Infantry Regiment encountered a newly planted landmine. Master Sergeant First Class Phichitchai Boonchola lost his right leg in the blast.

This is the second time Thai personnel have been injured by what are believed to be new mines. In response, the government has ordered the closure of all border checkpoints under the authority of the 2nd Army Area. Tourists are also strictly prohibited from entering the area for their safety.

As part of the downgraded relations, the Thai Ambassador to Cambodia will be recalled, and the Cambodian Ambassador to Thailand will be expelled. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will also hand over a formal protest letter to Cambodia. Further decisions on diplomatic relations will be made at a later date. (NNT)
