The Interior Ministry, in coordination with key digital and telecom agencies, successfully tested the Cell Broadcast Emergency Alert System across multiple provinces, paving the way for real-time disaster warnings starting July.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Ministry of Interior has confirmed that the nationwide launch of the Cell Broadcast Emergency Alert System remains on schedule for July 2025. The system will deliver real-time emergency notifications to mobile phones in disaster-affected areas, covering events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, floods, landslides, cold waves, and severe air pollution. Alerts will include both text and audio messages, ensuring accessibility for people with hearing or visual impairments without requiring any additional applications.

Led by Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the Interior Ministry has coordinated with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, the Public Relations Department, and Thailand’s three main mobile network operators to conduct system testing across the country.

Testing began in early May with building-level trials in five provinces, including Bangkok, followed by district-level tests in another five locations on May 7. Large-scale provincial tests took place on May 13 in Chiang Mai, Udon Thani, Ayutthaya, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Bangkok. Officials reported successful results and are now preparing for the final system rollout.

The next step is to install the central Cell Broadcast System, which will manage and send government alerts to mobile users through network providers. The system is expected to be fully functional by July.

The Interior Ministry is also running a nationwide awareness campaign to inform the public about the new system and reduce the risk of confusion when emergency alerts are issued. (NNT)
