BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) conducted a test of the national Cell Broadcast emergency alert system on May 7, at 1:00 p.m. The test, aimed at assessing the system’s readiness in real-time scenarios, took place at the district level in five locations across the country.

Mobile phones in the capital districts of Lampang, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Sawan, Surat Thani, and Din Daeng district in Bangkok received a text alert accompanied by a loud warning tone lasting around eight to ten seconds. Residents in nearby areas may have also received the message due to signal overlap.

The test alert contained no links and was sent purely for technical evaluation. Authorities advised the public not to be alarmed, as it was not a real emergency.

Cell Broadcast is a direct messaging system that sends alerts to all mobile phones connected to towers in a targeted area, ensuring rapid communication during emergencies. The test was set to improve national readiness and public safety during disaster events.

The DDPM coordinated the test with mobile operators and relevant local authorities to monitor the response and technical performance across the selected districts.
