BANGKOK, Thailand – The Joint Information Center on the Thailand-Cambodia Situation has clarified recent reports concerning activity at the Chong Chom permanent border crossing in Surin province, following the circulation of information on social media and in various media outlets.
According to the center, Thai authorities observed inappropriate movements by Cambodian troops near a barbed-wire boundary area, including behavior considered provocative toward Thai personnel. In response, Thai forces deployed M113 armored vehicles to secure the area and reduce the risk of further tension, in accordance with the Dec. 27, 2025 joint statement governing border conduct.
The statement also addressed a recent visit by the ASEAN Observer Team from Cambodia to a casino compound late last week. The visit took place entirely within areas under Cambodian control and did not extend into territory held by Thai forces, where established control measures remain in effect.
Thai authorities said any future observer visits should be coordinated in advance through agreed mechanisms such as the Regional Border Committee or the Joint Boundary Commission. The center stated that the overall situation remains under control, with no rise in tensions. Officials also urged the public to avoid sharing unverified information that could affect relations between the two countries. (NNT)
