BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has begun disbursing financial assistance to families of those who perished in the March 28 earthquake, which led to extensive damage across multiple provinces. At a ceremony held in Bangkok on April 18, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul presented funeral compensation of 100,000 baht each to 17 families whose claims have been verified.
The earthquake, which originated in Myanmar, led to 49 confirmed deaths in Thailand, with two additional cases still undergoing identity verification. Bangkok was the most affected area. The revised relief package includes 100,000 baht in funeral support, an equal amount for individuals with permanent disabilities, and reimbursement of medical costs not covered by existing benefits.
The deceased whose identities have been confirmed have been transported to their hometowns for religious rites. Families from provinces such as Ubon Ratchathani, Nong Khai, Nan, Uthai Thani, Udon Thani, Nakhon Phanom, Chainat, Khon Kaen, Phitsanulok, Suphanburi, Chaiyaphum, and Nong Bua Lamphu have received assistance. One case involved a child collecting the funds on behalf of a parent who died in the collapse of the State Audit Office in Bangkok.
Authorities have called on remaining affected individuals to submit the necessary documentation to claim support. Required documents include a national ID, household registration, certified disaster reports, and, where relevant, proof of property ownership and photographs showing damage. Applications in Bangkok should be submitted through district offices, while residents in other provinces must contact their local administrative organizations.
The DDPM stated that relief operations will be conducted with speed, accuracy, and fairness. Coordination is ongoing with provincial and local governments to assess damages and compile reports. Once documentation is verified, eligible claims will be processed for payment. Individuals affected can contact the DDPM hotline at 1784 or utilize official digital channels for additional information. (NNT)
