New rebates for foreign and domestic productions, along with support for digital content and film festivals, position Thailand as a leading hub for international filmmaking and cultural exchange.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Ministry of Culture has announced approval of an 845 million baht incentive package to attract foreign film productions to Thailand and strengthen the country’s film and digital content industries. The approval was given during the first meeting of the National Film and Video Committee for 2025, chaired by Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong.

The funding, drawn from the Central Budget’s Emergency and Necessary Reserve, will provide rebates to seven foreign productions that invested a combined 4.48 billion baht in filming in Thailand. The committee also granted official recognition to six international film festivals under the Film and Video Act, supporting the country’s role as a regional hub for film and cultural events.

Alongside foreign production incentives, the committee endorsed a cash rebate scheme for domestic filmmakers. Productions with budgets starting at 20 million baht will be eligible for a 15 percent rebate, with the rate increasing to 30 percent for projects exceeding 50 million baht, featuring international distribution, or promoting social and cultural values. Officials said the measure is expected to improve competitiveness and enhance Thailand’s presence in the global film market.

The meeting also approved measures to attract digital content projects, including a 20 percent rebate for foreign companies that hire Thai operators to produce animation and visual effects. To qualify, contracts must be worth at least 5 million baht, and applications must be filed before work begins. The Ministry of Culture will establish a subcommittee to finalize details and submit the framework to the Cabinet for approval.

Additional decisions included the appointment of new experts to the Film and Video Review Committee and updates on the amendment of the Film and Video Act of 2008. The committee also reviewed strategies to expand the reach of Thai films and videos at home and abroad, building momentum for the country’s growing creative economy. (NNT)
