Ahead Cabinet meeting, acting prime minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon viewed an exhibit on the world’s longest petrified wood specimen.

The specimen was discovered in the area that will soon become Doi Soi Malai-Mai Klai Pen Hin National Park in Tak province. At 69.7 meters, it is the longest petrified wood specimen in the world, as certified by Guinness World Records (GWR). The environment ministry and the Geological Society of Thailand held a ceremony to acknowledge the new world record on July 8. The agencies now aim to elevate the petrified wood site to a world-class geological tourism destination.

On this occasion, Gen. Prawit inquired about the discovery of the specimen and the process involved in wood petrification. He also urged everybody to help conserve this geological heritage site and treat it as a national treasure. Doing so would keep the site intact so the public and Thailand’s youths can keep learning from it.

The previous world record for petrified wood belonged to a specimen discovered in Xinjiang, China. That specimen is a 38-meter-long piece of petrified wood. Thailand’s specimen is almost 70 meters long and has been certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s longest piece of petrified wood. (NNT)
