Thailand and Canada set sights on stronger trade and digital partnerships before 65th anniversary

BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have taken part in a meeting to discuss strengthening bilateral relations ahead of the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2026. The talk covered trade, education, digital cooperation, and regional engagement, building on recent dialogue held during the ASEAN Summit.

Both leaders expressed support for advancing the Thailand–Canada Free Trade Agreement and expanding collaboration in vocational education, especially in healthcare and elderly care. The two sides discussed creating more training opportunities for Thai students in Canada and welcomed Air Canada’s move to provide year-round service on the Vancouver–Bangkok route, which is expected to boost tourism and travel between the two countries.

Thailand proposed closer cooperation on food security and agricultural trade, offering to serve as a regional hub for production and distribution. The two leaders also agreed to enhance partnerships in clean energy, digital innovation, and smart farming—sectors aligned with their shared development priorities.


On security, both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in tackling transnational crime and online fraud. Thailand expressed interest in working with Canada to improve its cybersecurity capacity, particularly through regional training networks.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to further enhance collaboration through APEC, ASEAN, ICAO, and other international platforms. Thailand thanked Canada for supporting its OECD accession and expressed support for Canada’s role on the ICAO Council. Both sides reaffirmed their intention to work together on shared priorities, including maritime cooperation, artificial intelligence, civil aviation, and regional economic integration. (NNT)
