BANGKOK, Thailand – The extraordinary session of the Thailand-Cambodia General Border Committee (GBC) has concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to the ceasefire and agreeing to establish joint observer teams. The outcome was announced in a press conference by Acting Defense Minister General Nattaphon Narkphanit.
During the meeting, it was agreed that interim observer teams will be established, composed of ASEAN military attachés from both Thailand and Cambodia, and led by the Malaysian military attaché in each respective country. Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to the July 28th ceasefire, which covers all weapon types and requires troops to remain at their current positions with no further reinforcements.
Further agreements include a commitment to refrain from provocative actions, both military and in the form of disinformation campaigns. The two nations also pledged to adhere to international humanitarian law, including the repatriation of deceased soldiers and prisoners of war in accordance with the 3rd Geneva Convention, and to maintain open communication channels.
General Nattaphon stated that during the talks, Thailand pointed out that it had strictly complied with the ceasefire, while the Cambodian side had continually violated it through military build-ups, UAV surveillance of Thai territory, and false information operations. A follow-up meeting will be held in one month to review progress on these agreements. (NNT)
