BANGKOK, Thailand – Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow told reporters at a recent media event that his tenure will last only four months, not four years, with the goal of completing this period without conflict while putting Thai diplomacy back on the global stage. His comments followed his speech at the 80th United Nations General Assembly, where he addressed international concerns, including the situation on the Thai–Cambodian border.
Sihasak noted that his brief term coincides with several major international events where Thailand will play a leading role, including the ASEAN Summit, APEC meetings, and the Lancang–Mekong Cooperation framework. He said every day must be used purposefully, with Thai foreign policy actively engaged wherever national interests are at stake.
Minister Sihasak acknowledged that Thailand has lost visibility internationally, with regional discussions often centered on Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. While Thailand is praised for its hospitality and tourism, he said the country must project greater strength and relevance beyond that image.
He attributed the decline in Thailand’s international profile to years of political instability, which weakened its influence abroad. Sihasak added that fast, agile, and decisive diplomacy could restore Thailand’s credibility and ensure that the country is once again recognized for its economic and political role. (NNT)
