Thai PM challenges new Bangkok Council to deliver for residents

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul urges close cooperation between the Bangkok Metropolitan Council and City Hall to improve services, strengthen governance, and enhance quality of life for Bangkok residents.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul opened the first meeting of the newly elected Bangkok Metropolitan Council on July 13, 2026. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting cooperation between the council and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to improve the capital and residents’ quality of life. The meeting was held at Bangkok City Hall 2 in Din Daeng, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Deputy Minister of Interior Jeseth Thaiseth, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, BMA executives, and senior officials in attendance.



Before the meeting, the assembly observed a moment of silence to mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother and HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati Krom Luang Rajasarinisiribajra Mahavajrarajadhita. Attendees also honored the victims of a recent fatal fire in Bangkok with a silent tribute. The Prime Minister congratulated the new members on earning the public’s trust. He noted Bangkok’s position as a major global city with diverse economic and social dynamics, and acknowledged the ongoing challenges that require continuous development. He emphasized the council’s key legislative responsibilities, including budget approval and meeting citizens’ needs through transparent and efficient governance.

The Prime Minister pledged the national government’s full support and cooperation with the legislative and executive branches of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making Bangkok a world-class city and enhancing the quality of life for Thai citizens and international residents. (NNT)
