BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s Minister of Social Development and Human Security has condemned Cambodia’s attacks on civilians as a crime against human dignity and a serious violation of international humanitarian law.
Minister of Social Development and Human Security Varawut Silpa-archa issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and solidarity with the victims of what he termed brutal and deliberate attacks by Cambodia on civilian areas in Thailand. He described the events not merely as a border violation, but as a violation of humanity itself.
The statement highlighted the human cost of the conflict, referencing the 13 civilians killed, including two 9-year-old boys and a 15-year-old girl, as well as over 30 who were injured. It noted that daily life locations like convenience stores and hospitals had become scenes of horror, and emphasized that the suffering of these families is not a statistic, but a permanent injustice.
The ministry condemned the acts as a direct aggression against Thai sovereignty and a serious breach of international law. It called for Cambodia to be held accountable under multiple international agreements, including the Geneva Conventions, the Ottawa Treaty on landmines, and conventions protecting the rights of children and persons with disabilities.
The statement urged the international community not to remain silent, asserting that silence in the face of such brutality is complicity. The ministry demanded that Cambodia immediately cease its aggression, respect Thai sovereignty, and take full responsibility for the harm caused to innocent people. (NNT)
