Top commanders cite national security threats, approve new fence construction, and set strict rules of engagement to counter potential violations.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s top military commanders have agreed to keep all border checkpoints with Cambodia closed indefinitely, citing the ongoing situation as a threat to national security.

The decision was made during the fifth meeting of the military commanders for the 2025 fiscal year, held at the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters. The meeting concluded that both permanent and temporary border crossings will remain shut until the situation is resolved or Cambodia is no longer considered a threat to Thailand. Commanders also approved the construction of a border fence, which will be built in areas where the demarcation line has been mutually agreed upon.

In disputed territories, patrols and surveillance will be intensified, and tactical roads will be constructed along the border.

Furthermore, the military leaders established a clear policy for responding to sovereignty violations based on international Rules of Engagement (ROE). This policy allows for self-defense measures to be initiated in response to any “Hostile Act” or “Hostile Intent,” particularly in cases of espionage or preparations for an attack. These operational guidelines have been presented to the Minister of Defense. (NNT)
