Thai King and Queen to make historic state visit to Laos after 32 years

Their Majesties King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida will pay an official visit to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic from March 16–18, 2026, at the invitation of President Thongloun Sisoulith, marking the first state visit to Laos by a Thai monarch since the 1994 visit of Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit.

BANGKOK, Thailand – His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen will pay an official visit to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic from March 16 to 18, 2026, at the invitation of President Thongloun Sisoulith. The visit seeks to strengthen royal friendship and further enhance bilateral relations between the Kingdom of Thailand and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

This historic visit will be the first official state visit to the Lao PDR by a Thai Monarch in 32 years, following the visit of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother in April 1994.

During the visit, Their Majesties will attend the official welcoming ceremony and meet with President Thongloun Sisoulith and his spouse at the Presidential Palace (Hor Kham) in Vientiane. Their Majesties will also meet with Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and his spouse, as well as President of the National Assembly Saysomphone Phomvihane and his spouse. The President of the Lao PDR will host a traditional Baci ceremony and an official state banquet in Their Majesties’ honor at the Presidential Palace.



Their Majesties will visit the Huay Son-Huay Sua Agriculture Development and Service Center (KM 22) in Vientiane, the first Royal Development Project in the Lao PDR initiated by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great. They will also pay homage at Pha That Luang and view traditional Lao silk and ancient textiles at the Lao Ancient Silk Palace.

This official visit is part of the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Laos, commemorated in 2025. The visit is expected to further strengthen the close ties between the two countries and deepen the longstanding friendship between their peoples. (NNT)
