Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Periswiwatana says Thailand has strong capacity for a regional bunkering hub under the Land Bridge project, clarifying that the projected 50 billion baht represents economic circulation rather than profit, and urging debate based on full industry context and data.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Periswiwatana addressed questions about projected bunkering revenue for the Land Bridge project, stating that Thailand has real capacity in this sector and clarifying that the 50 billion baht figure refers to revenue circulation, not net profit.

She stated that the government values all opinions on the project, but noted that some criticism may stem from an incomplete understanding of the energy industry and international business models.

The deputy spokesperson explained that Thailand’s large oil refineries have a combined production capacity that exceeds domestic demand, making the country a regional exporter of refined petroleum products. She added that claims of insufficient capability do not reflect the industry’s realities.

She clarified that bunkering is not solely dependent on on-site refineries, but on positioning Thailand as a strategic hub along international shipping routes using a trading-hub model focused on logistics volume and service efficiency.

She emphasized that the projected 50 billion baht represents circulating economic revenue from related commercial activities, not direct profit for the state or private investors.

The government has structured the project for private investors to fund energy infrastructure, including oil storage and service systems, through public-private partnerships. The state will provide strategic direction and reduce fiscal burdens.

The deputy spokesperson added that public debate and scrutiny are important, but discussions should be based on complete information and sound reasoning to maximize national benefit.

She stated that the Land Bridge should be evaluated as a strategic infrastructure project within its full economic context, rather than by isolated figures. She reaffirmed that the government will proceed carefully, transparently, and remain open to constructive feedback. (NNT)
