Deputy PM Phumtham Wechayachai calls for restraint and dialogue amid Thai-Cambodian border concerns, warning that closure would hurt local communities and increase tensions.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has dismissed speculation about a possible closure of the Thai-Cambodian border, warning that such a measure could have a serious impact on local communities and increase tension. In a statement shared recently on social media, Phumtham addressed concerns over reports of disagreements between Thailand’s political and military sectors regarding border management.

The Deputy Premier confirmed that recent discussions between civilian and military leadership reached a mutual understanding that peaceful resolution remains the priority. Both Thailand and Cambodia continue to engage diplomatically and are working to prevent actions that could worsen the situation.

While closing the border would not amount to open conflict, it would disrupt cross-border trade and travel, placing additional pressure on communities that rely on daily movement. The government maintains that current conditions allow for continued legal and diplomatic engagement.

Thailand’s military remains alert and continues to protect national sovereignty. The government, armed forces, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs are addressing the issue through the Joint Boundary Committee (JBC), a bilateral mechanism established to resolve disputes through fact-based negotiation and legal frameworks.

Phumtham reaffirmed that the government is acting carefully to avoid escalation. Efforts are underway through official channels to ensure the issue is addressed with fairness and stability, aiming to maintain peace and protect the interests of both nations. (NNT)
