Maj Gen Winthai confirms Thai forces now operate in the once-contested Chong An Ma area under ceasefire protocols—expelling Cambodian troops from key positions while upholding unarmed joint patrol agreements around the Ta Om Monument.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, clarified the current situation in the Chong An Ma area near the Thai–Cambodian border. He stated that prior to the July 28, 2025, clash, Thai troops were unable to access the area surrounding Ta Om Monument, as Cambodian forces had maintained exclusive control there, disrupting the natural military balance.

Following the recent ceasefire, Thai troops have gained entry into the area under conditions jointly agreed upon by both sides. On July 30, the Cambodian military brought military attachés from 13 countries to observe the area. At that time, Thai forces were already in control of the Ta Om Monument zone.

A mutual protocol governs operations in the contested Chong An Ma area:

Each side may deploy five unarmed personnel into the jointly claimed zone.
Weapons are prohibited during operations.
Both sides conduct 15-minute joint patrols around the Ta Om area and surrounding locations.
Patrols are not restricted by time and may take place at any hour.

The Royal Thai Army has since expanded control across several previously disputed areas, successfully pushing Cambodian troops out of Thai territory. This includes the occupation of key strategic military positions. Thai forces are stationed only in areas confirmed to be within Thai borders and are lawfully held to maintain tactical advantages and prevent further confrontations. (NNT)
