BANGKOK, Thailand – Army Spokesperson Major General Winthai Suvaree has issued a statement addressing claims made by Cambodian authorities regarding an alleged border incident. Cambodia asserted that at 12:35 p.m., seven Thai soldiers patrolled into the Chong Krang area of Phanom Dong Rak District, Surin Province, and threw a hand grenade at Cambodian positions, injuring three of their soldiers.
The Royal Thai Army rejected the allegation, stating that it is false and a complete distortion of the facts. A rapid investigation with the responsible Thai units confirmed that the explosion occurred on Cambodian territory and was not caused by Thai forces. At the time of the incident, Thai troops were conducting routine patrols to secure road construction on the Thai side. They observed Cambodian soldiers monitoring their activities. Around 12:00 p.m., Thai personnel heard an explosion from the Cambodian side, followed by confusion as Cambodian troops attempted to assist their injured comrades.
The Royal Thai Army emphasized that its forces did not use any weapons or throw grenades.
The assessment indicates that the incident likely resulted from newly deployed Cambodian troops, who lacked experience and familiarity with hazardous terrain, accidentally stepping on landmines left behind by their own side. Major General Winthai concluded by reaffirming that the Royal Thai Army strictly adheres to agreements, rules of engagement, and international law. He urged the public and the international community not to be misled by baseless accusations and called on Cambodia to cease spreading false reports that undermine neighborly relations and border stability.
