Thai Army confirms Cambodian forces target Buri Ram Airport and Surin Hospital

Thai troops maintain defensive positions along the Thailand–Cambodia border on Dec. 8, as authorities evacuate tens of thousands of residents from high-risk areas in Buriram, Surin, Si Sa Ket, and Ubon Ratchathani.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Second Army Area has provided an update on the security situation along the Thailand–Cambodia border, reporting that Cambodian forces have escalated their actions by directing weapons toward key civilian areas, including Buri Ram Airport in Buriram Province and Prasat Hospital in Surin Province.



According to the Second Army Area’s operations center, at 3:00 a.m. on December 8, 2025, intelligence imagery indicated that Cambodian forces had designated these civilian sites as potential targets for supporting fire.

At 5:00 A.M., Cambodian troops opened fire on Thai positions in the Chong Ahn Ma area. Thai forces responded in accordance with the rules of engagement, and all personnel were confirmed safe. By 6:00 A.M., Cambodian forces continued firing indirect weapons into the same area, prompting ongoing defensive measures on the Thai side.


Authorities also reported ongoing evacuations in the four border provinces of Buriram, Surin, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani. Approximately 70 percent of residents in border districts have already moved out of high-risk zones. A total of 35,623 people have formally registered at temporary shelters, while others are believed to be staying with relatives or still in transit. During evacuation operations, one resident in Nam Yuen District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, passed away due to a pre-existing medical condition.

The Second Army Area affirmed that it continues to monitor developments closely and remains fully committed to safeguarding public safety and defending Thailand’s sovereignty. (NNT)
