The State Railway of Thailand reports steady inbound passenger flows as travelers return to Bangkok after the New Year 2026 holiday, with additional special train services in place to meet rising demand.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has confirmed its readiness to accommodate passengers returning to Bangkok during the New Year 2026 holiday.

SRT Deputy Governor and Acting Governor Anan Photnimdang reported that on January 2, 2026, a total of 95,389 passengers used rail services nationwide. This comprised 45,286 outbound passengers and 50,103 inbound passengers. The busiest routes were the Southern Line (33,126 passengers), the Northeastern Line (23,892), the Northern Line (17,159), the Eastern Line (11,038), the Mahachai Line (7,634), and the Maeklong Line (2,540).

Passenger volumes at terminal stations on the Northern, Southern, and Northeastern lines showed a gradual return to Bangkok as travelers prepared to resume work after the holiday. Overall traffic remained moderate, as many chose to return on January 3.

The SRT expects a steady increase in inbound passengers from the evening onward, ahead of the first working day after the holiday on January 5. To meet this demand, SRT has arranged four additional special train services to supplement regular operations.

The SRT has deployed staff to assist and provide information at key locations. Passengers arriving by train or state-run interprovincial buses at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal can easily connect to other public transport, including urban rail, buses, and taxis, for efficient onward travel.
