
BANGKOK, Thailand – The Embassy of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to Thailand commemorated Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Anniversary with a grand ceremony in Bangkok, highlighting the strong and enduring partnership between the two nations.
The event was attended by Hon. Sunil Handunneththi, Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development of Sri Lanka, and Thailand’s Minister of Culture Sabeeda Thaised, along with senior government officials, diplomats, business leaders, and members of the Sri Lankan community.
H.E. Mrs. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, expressed her appreciation for Thailand’s continued friendship and cooperation. She emphasized the steady growth of bilateral relations across trade, tourism, economic coordination, and future cooperation.
Minister Sabeeda Thaised described Sri Lanka as a key partner in strategic cooperation, trade, and people-to-people relations. She highlighted the longstanding friendship between the two countries, noting that Thailand and Sri Lanka have consistently stood by each other during difficult times and natural disasters. The Minister reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to further strengthening collaboration across multiple sectors.
The ceremony began with a traditional Sri Lankan oil lamp-lighting ritual, symbolizing prosperity, wisdom, and blessings for continued partnership between the two nations.
Both countries expressed their intention to deepen cooperation in 2026, particularly in labor collaboration and economic growth through the implementation of the Free Trade Agreement, reflecting a shared vision for a stronger and more resilient partnership in the years ahead. (NNT)
