SURAT THANI, Thailand – Koh Tao, one of the world’s leading diving destinations, has officially launched the “Spotlight Koh Tao 2026” festival, showcasing its evolution from a premier global diving hub into a premier model for sustainable island tourism.

​The three-day event, held from May 1 to 3, 2026, at Sairee Beach and Ta-O Coconut Grove, is organized under the theme “Beyond the Waves, Beneath the Blue.” The event is a collaboration between the Koh Tao Tourism Business Association, public and private sector partners, and the local community. Surat Thani Governor Chumphot Wannachatsiri presided over the opening ceremony, emphasizing a collective commitment to sustainable development.



​Koh Tao is a key economic contributor to Thailand, attracting over 700,000 visitors and generating more than 20 billion baht annually. Now in its fifth year, the Spotlight Koh Tao project incorporates the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy model and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to balance economic growth with environmental and community well-being.

​The Governor stated that Koh Tao is a model of sustainable tourism, balancing business, community, and nature. He noted that these collaborations enhance Thailand’s international tourism profile. Koh Phangan District Chief Pisit Thongchem emphasized the importance of preserving marine resources for future generations. Rumleuk Assavasin, President of the Koh Tao Tourism Business Association, described the festival as a testament to the community’s commitment to economic recovery and environmental harmony.

The festival offers over 12 sustainability-focused activities, including coral restoration, recycling workshops, a green market with 30 eco-friendly vendors, and wellness experiences. It is expected to attract more than 3,000 participants and generate 30-40 million baht for the local economy, positioning Koh Tao as a global leader in environmental stewardship. (NNT)
