BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand Tightens Airport Security to Combat Drug Smuggling
Thailand is stepping up its fight against drug smuggling — right at the airport gates. Airports of Thailand (AOT) is working with the Customs Department, Royal Thai Police, and other agencies to strengthen baggage inspections using X-ray scanners, K-9 detection dogs, and integrated databases for faster, more effective screening.
AOT is also coordinating with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), Immigration Bureau, and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board to align with international security standards. Since 7 July 2026, specially trained narcotics detection dogs have been deployed at Suvarnabhumi Airport, carrying out random checks on passengers’ and crew members’ baggage. AOT President Paweena Jariyathitipong said the move supports the country’s national security mission, backed by personnel, technology, and risk management systems. The ultimate goal is to stop Thailand from becoming a transit route for illegal drugs and strengthen trust in the country’s airport security. (PRD)
