BANGKOK, Thailand – The First Army Area’s Operations Center has reported the discovery of six more landmines in Sa Kaeo province during ongoing clearance operations led by the Burapha Task Force in coordination with the Thailand Mine Action Center (TMAC). The latest finds were located in Nong Ya Kaeo and Nong Chan villages, both situated near the Thai-Cambodian border.
In Nong Ya Kaeo Village, two active anti-personnel landmines were found in an area previously marked for clearance and eventual return to public use. These were identified as one PMN-type pressure-activated mine and one POMZ-2 fragmentation mine. Since October 10, a total of 11 landmines have been uncovered in the area, including seven PMN mines, one MN79 mine, and three POMZ-2 mines.
Additional mines were discovered in Nong Chan Village during the first day of a hazard survey near Boundary Markers 47 and 48. The search team uncovered four anti-personnel mines: three PMN mines in active condition and one damaged PMD-6M pressure mine. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit successfully removed three of them. One mine remains in place due to difficult terrain and will require specialized handling for safe extraction.
To ensure public safety, the task force has established restricted zones around the affected areas to prevent access until clearance is completed. (NNT)
