ANG THONG, Thailand – A police officer helped a distressed 39-year-old man to safety after he was found sitting on the edge of an overpass in Ang Thong before offering him food money and a ride home. The incident occurred on July 19 after concerned members of the public alerted Muang Ang Thong Police that a man was sitting with his legs dangling over the railing of the Asia Highway overpass in Ban It sub-district, fearing he might be in danger. Responding officer Pol. Capt. Suwich Watchawong, Deputy Inspector of the Prevention and Suppression Unit, found the man sitting quietly on the bridge. Rather than rushing the situation, the officer calmly spoke with him for some time until the 39-year-old agreed to climb down safely.
During their conversation, the man explained that he was originally from Lopburi but had been living alone in rented accommodation in Ang Thong. He said he had recently lost his job, had no money, and was struggling with several personal problems, including family difficulties, the end of a relationship, and challenges rebuilding his life after previous involvement with drugs and a prison sentence.
The man told police he had climbed onto the bridge simply to watch traffic pass below while reflecting on his life, prompting worried passersby to contact authorities. After ensuring the man was safe, the officer gave him some of his own money to buy food, encouraged him to keep moving forward, and personally rode him home on a police motorcycle. The compassionate response has drawn praise from local residents, who commended the officer for treating the man with kindness and dignity.
