Young Phuket performers, some just five years old, showcase Thailand’s classical Khon dance through scenes from the Ramakien at the ITOP Forum 2026 in Jeju, South Korea.

JEJU, South Korea – Young performers from Phuket province, some as young as five, showcased traditional Thai Khon at the 27th Inter-Islands Tourism Policy (ITOP) Forum 2026, held at Jeju Stone Park in South Korea from October 28 to 30. The children, representing Phuket City Municipality Kindergarten, introduced international audiences to Thailand’s classical performing arts through scenes from the Ramakien, the Thai adaptation of the ancient epic Ramayana. The opening performance featured the battle between Phra Ram and Thotsakan, the demon king of Lanka, portraying the struggle between good and evil. Through classical dance, traditional music, and expressive movement, the children brought the epic to life while showcasing Khon’s distinctive artistry.

On October 29, the young performers presented another well-known episode from the Ramakien, featuring Hanuman and Suphannamatcha. The story follows Hanuman as he investigates the disappearance of stones being used to build a causeway to Lanka. He discovers that Suphannamatcha, Thotsakan’s mermaid daughter, has been removing them under her father’s orders. Their encounter gradually turns from confrontation to courtship, leading her to abandon her efforts to disrupt the construction. The performances, also attended by Phuket Governor Chodnarin Koedsom and several other high-ranking officials, gave the young artists a chance to gain international experience, keeping the country’s traditional performing arts alive for future generations.
