Dr. Sumanee said Pfizer’s vaccine for children is made of a different formula – children only need 10 micrograms per dose, while adults need 30 micrograms per dose and the normal vaccine for adults cannot be divided into three doses and used in children.

According to the Department of Disease Control, the Covid vaccine the department ordered from Pfizer will be delivered by late January or by early February.

The Department of Disease Control’s Director of Risk Communication and Health Behaviour Development Office, Dr. Sumanee Watcharasin, said vaccines for children are in high demand. Countries around the world including Thailand ordered them. Thailand is quite lucky to get one this fast. She said once the vaccine arrives, the department will start distributing it for children under the school-based system. In the early phase, children aged 9 – 11 will get the jabs first.

She said Pfizer’s vaccine for children is made of a different formula. Children only need 10 micrograms per dose, while adults need 30 micrograms per dose. The normal vaccine for adults cannot be divided into three doses and used in children.

Currently, the Food and Drug Administration is registering inactivated vaccines, namely Sinovac and Sinopaham to be used in children. She said the vaccines will first need approval from the National Vaccine Institute’s Immunity Promotion Subcommittee. Once the vaccines are approved, parents will be able to choose from choices of Covid-19 vaccines that their children can get on a voluntary basis. (NNT)
