The People’s Party denounces anti-democratic rhetoric at the June 28 “United Land Power” rally, warning against coup promotion.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The People’s Party has condemned the leaders of the “United Land Power” rally held on June 28 at Victory Monument, accusing them of inciting excessive nationalism and laying the groundwork for a military coup. The party reiterated that the only appropriate solution to the ongoing political crisis is the dissolution of parliament and fresh elections.

The rally, organized by the “United Land Power” group, officially called for Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to resign and urged coalition parties to withdraw their support from the government. While these demands fall within the democratic rights of citizens, the People’s Party expressed serious concern over speeches by some rally leaders that appeared to legitimize and promote undemocratic actions, including a military takeover. The party also condemned the use of extreme nationalist rhetoric that crossed acceptable boundaries.

“The People’s Party strongly condemns any attempts to justify a coup d’état, which is a grave violation of the constitution and democratic principles,” said a party spokesperson. The party called on the public who support the rally due to dissatisfaction with the prime minister and the government to reconsider their backing, especially given that some leaders openly support coups and political interference outside democratic processes.

“Although protesting and political expression are democratic rights, we have learned painfully over the past 20 years how coups have severely damaged the nation and its people. The two military takeovers have only worsened corruption, distorted the justice system, and benefited cronies and monopolistic interests,” the statement added.

The People’s Party warned against allowing political failures to be exploited as a pretext for coups or other undemocratic solutions, which would only deepen the political and economic crises. Instead, the party affirmed that the best path forward is through constitutional means — dissolving parliament and holding new elections to return power to the people. This democratic process will allow citizens to determine their future leadership and government.

“The only way out of the current political crisis is the normal parliamentary process,” the party emphasized. “Dissolution and elections are the way to restore the supreme power of the nation to the people and ensure a new, legitimate government.” (TNA)
