BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, currently suspended from her premiership duties, officially began her work as Minister of Culture on Friday morning, arriving at the ministry at 9:09 a.m. in a traditional Thai outfit of royal purple — the ministry’s symbolic color — and wearing a composed expression. Upon arrival, she paid respects to the sacred symbols of the ministry, various guardian shrines, and other deities at the front of the building.
In her first remarks as Minister, Paetongtarn expressed her joy at completing these traditional rites, calling it a good omen for a fresh beginning. She emphasized that although the Ministry of Culture is often seen as a “small ministry,” Thai culture itself holds immense value and global appeal. “Wherever we go, our culture sells itself,” she said.
Acknowledging her current suspension from the prime ministerial role, she said candidly, “It’s a bit unfortunate, but I’m full of energy. I’m truly excited for this opportunity to serve as Minister of Culture for the first time.”
Drawing comparisons to South Korea’s success, Paetongtarn stressed the potential for the ministry to become a major driver of Thailand’s soft power economy, generating new income streams and job opportunities for the Thai people. She shared that she had already discussed such models with ambassadors and envisions the ministry playing a central role in supporting creative careers and boosting Thailand’s international cultural recognition.
“Even if I’ve had to pause my prime ministerial duties,” she concluded, “I now have the opportunity to give my all as Minister of Culture — and that is a powerful chance to do something meaningful.”
