BANGKOK, Thailand – The Office of the Ombudsman has celebrated its 25th anniversary with a two-day seminar in Bangkok, signaling a shift from a traditional complaint-resolution body to a broader advocate for good governance and social justice. The event, which highlighted the institution’s evolving role and future priorities, was attended by government officials, academics, and representatives from civil society organizations.

Chief Ombudsman Somsak Suwansujarit announced plans to expand the office’s proactive engagement, including new initiatives to strengthen public trust and enhance accessibility. Discussions during the seminar revolved around the promotion of administrative fairness and the alignment of the Ombudsman’s functions with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 16, which calls for just, peaceful, and inclusive societies.

International collaboration was a key theme, with representatives from the UNDP and Indonesia’s Ombudsman office sharing comparative insights on public accountability and the challenges of safeguarding institutional independence. The exchanges represented Thailand’s intent to position its Ombudsman not only as a national safeguard but also as an active player in global governance networks.

The event also featured practical services for the public, including legal consultations and complaint registration booths. Exhibitions showcased landmark cases that have shaped the office’s impact over the past 25 years, stressing its role in bureaucratic reform and citizen rights protection.

Closing the seminar, the Office of the Ombudsman outlined its ambition to deepen public participation and tackle emerging governance challenges. The institution pledged to build on its legacy while adapting to new demands, thereby contributing to Thailand’s broader efforts to strengthen accountable and inclusive institutions. (NNT)
