BANGKOK, July 2015 – Cooperation has been established among relevant ministries to prepare the country for its upcoming status as an aging society.

Minister of Science and Technology Pichet Durongkaveroj disclosed that his ministry has been assigned by the Prime Minister to coordinate with other responsible agencies in drawing up preparatory measures for Thailand’s transformation into an aging society. Those agencies consist of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, and the Ministry of Culture.

Some of the measures will focus on the search for new methods and technologies that will enable the elderly to continue working after retirement, have a better living condition and enjoy a stronger bond with the rest of the family. Other issues to be addressed include shrinkage of the working-age population, a decrease in workers’ productivity and a need to import foreign workers into the Kingdom.

The Science and Technology Minister said the measures will be incorporated into a 20-year national policy aimed at providing the best care for senior citizens in a sustainable manner.
