Deputy PM Anutin orders governors along the Thai-Cambodian border to boost rear-area security and readiness following the May 28 military skirmish.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Reinforcements and civil defense efforts were instructed to support Thai troops amid ongoing tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered provincial governors along the Thai-Cambodian border to prepare resources and personnel to assist military forces. The directive follows the May 28 skirmish between Thai and Cambodian troops, emphasizing the protection of rear zones to support front-line operations.

Rear area security is a core responsibility of the Ministry of Interior during conflict, ensuring stability and facilitating military operations. Minister Anutin also stressed the use of all existing administrative mechanisms to support troops and reassure residents in affected areas. In Ubon Ratchathani, local officials have already convened to enhance readiness in border districts.

Traisuree Taisaranakul, Secretary to the Minister and Spokesperson for the Interior Ministry, reiterated Anutin’s commitment to defending Thai sovereignty and morale. The ministry, usually tasked with domestic order, now acts as a vital support arm for the military during abnormal conditions.

Anutin is also scheduled to visit Ubon Ratchathani Province after returning from a global disaster risk reduction summit in Geneva. There, he will meet with governors of border provinces to monitor security, promote economic activity, and address local needs as part of national defense and development strategies. (NNT)
